Mamuli-Surf Helmet: Redefining Water Safety with a Surfer-Designed Solution
The Mamuli-Surf Helmet, created by Daan van Rooijen, introduces a new standard for water safety in surfing. The project was inspired by a serious accident involving van Rooijen's sister, Guusje, who was hit by another surfer in Bali on July 10, 2024, causing severe skull and brain injuries. The helmet is designed by surfers for surfers, addressing the lack of suitable products on the market that are bulky, block ears, and compromise performance. It features an ultra-lightweight construction, free ears, honeycomb ventilation for natural water flow, and a 360° adjustment system with a magnetic one-hand closure. Certified to the European EN 1385 standard for water sports, it is available in three sizes for athletes and recreational users aged 8 and above. The crowdfunding campaign launched in April 2026 exceeded its $34,000 goal within a month, and the moulds are now in production ahead of a global launch in 2027. The brand plans to test recycled materials (EPS, EVA, ABS, and plastic) to create the world's first sustainable surf helmet. Additionally, the Mamuli-Surf Safety Program will donate helmets to remote surfing communities in Indonesia, collaborating with professional surfer Oney Anwar. With 35 million surfers worldwide, less than 10% wear helmets, yet 1 in 3 surfers experiences an accident annually, with 34% of injuries involving the head and neck.
