institutional · 2026-04-20

Mami Kataoka has been named the artistic director for the 21st Biennale of Sydney, scheduled to kick off in 2018. This is a groundbreaking appointment, as she will be the first Asian curator in this role since the biennial started in 1973. Currently, she holds the position of chief curator at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, a role she has occupied since 2003. Kataoka is known for her work on the Roppongi Crossing exhibitions in 2004 and 2013, featuring notable artists like Ai Weiwei and Lee Bul. Her past experiences include curating at the Hayward Gallery in London and the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery. She also serves on several boards and as a professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design. This news follows the 2016 edition, curated by Stephanie Rosenthal.
