Mami Kataoka and Arja Miller appointed curators for 2027 Helsinki Biennial

The Helsinki Biennial's fourth edition in summer 2027 will be curated by Mami Kataoka and Arja Miller. Kataoka directs Tokyo's Mori Art Museum and previously served as artistic director for the 21st Biennale of Sydney (2018) and Aichi Triennale (2022). She was international curator at London's Hayward Gallery (2007–2009) and co-artistic director of the 9th Gwangju Biennial (2009). Miller directs both Helsinki Art Museum (HAM) and the Helsinki Biennial, having previously worked as chief curator at Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma (2008–2017) and Espoo Museum of Modern Art (2017–2023). Their collaborative vision emphasizes art that fosters transcultural dialogue and explores environmental and cosmological themes through site-specific, multisensory works. Kataoka's curatorial practice focuses on social themes and global structures, while Miller specializes in speculative works addressing universal themes. The curators aim to create a polyphonic biennial resonating locally and internationally. Kataoka served on Documenta 16's finding committee in 2024 and will select Finland's 2025 Ars Fennica Art Prize recipient.
