MAMCO Geneva: Switzerland's Largest Contemporary Art Museum at 25
MAMCO (Musée d'Art Moderne et COntemporain) in Geneva, Switzerland, is the largest contemporary art museum in the country, with 3,500 square meters of exhibition space, a collection of 3,000 works, and around 50,000 annual visitors. Over 25 years, it has hosted 500 exhibitions. The museum, directed by Lionel Bovier, focuses on art from the 1960s onward. Its museological model places the permanent collection on two floors, with temporary exhibitions on the first floor, integrating them into a historical context while keeping the collection dynamic. MAMCO shares a building with the CAC – Centre d'Art Contemporain, directed by Andrea Bellini, forming the pivot of the Quartier des Bains, a high-density art district with numerous galleries and coordinated vernissages. The museum originated from a citizen group in the 1970s and later became a foundation through public-private partnership between the city and canton. Bovier's curatorial approach, based on W.J.T. Mitchell's visual studies, grounds a season of exhibitions in a solid ontological thesis about art, its system, and reception, making complex issues accessible. The building, originally the SIP (Société genevoise d'Instruments de Physique) factory built in 1958, was renovated in 1994 by architect Erwin Oberwiler with Michel Buri and Serge Candolfi, preserving its industrial character, including original materials, coatings, and neon lighting grids.
