MAMCO Geneva presents five exhibitions exploring conceptual art and activism
MAMCO in Geneva is closing a cycle of exhibitions that recontextualize its collection and shed new light on recent art history. 'Pictures & After,' curated by Lionel Bovier and Julien Fronsacq, showcases the museum's rich holdings of the Pictures Generation, including lesser-known figures like Nicole Gravier, Jennifer Bolande, and Julia Wachtel. A solo show on Mierle Laderman Ukeles (b. 1939), curated by Bovier and Elisabeth Jobin, highlights her feminist and social practice centered on maintenance and motherhood. François Ristori (1936–2015), a member of the BMPT collective, is featured in a show curated by Fronsacq, emphasizing his 'Traces-Formes' system of interlocking polygonal shapes. Ian Burn (1939–1993), associated with Art & Language, is the subject of a retrospective curated by Ann Stephen, tracing his career from minimal-conceptual works to his final series 'Value Added Landscape' (1992–93), where he overlaid landscape paintings with plexiglas texts. The Canadian collective General Idea (Jorge Zontal, Felix Partz, AA Bronson) receives a major retrospective curated by Bovier and Claire Gilman, covering their early Miss General Idea pageant and their later AIDS activism, including works like 'AIDS (Nauman)' (1991) and 250 drawings from the Drawing Center. All exhibitions run until June 18, 2023.
