MAMbo's Villa delle Rose Opens for Mahony Collective Residency

institutional · 2026-05-05

The MAMbo museum in Bologna has launched a new residency program called ROSE at Villa delle Rose, hosted by the Sandra Natali Residency. The first participants are the Mahony Collective (Stephan Kobatsch, Jenny Wolka, Clemens Leuschner), who will use the villa as an open studio for six weeks starting June 9. The residency stems from an eccentric bequest and was inaugurated in 2010. Villa delle Rose was donated in 1916 by Countess Nerina Armandi Avogli to the city of Bologna to become a modern art gallery. The selected artists also include Roberto Pugliese. The Mahony Collective, an Austro-German trio, produce relational research incorporating local information, objects, and narratives. For their Bologna exhibition, they are developing work on the ambiguity of contemporary Europe's image in relation to colonial ghosts, drawing from the University of Bologna's Museum of Anthropology. A philological exhibition project is planned for September, recreating the villa's original 1936 installation.
