Maltabiennale.art 2024 Launches with Insular Focus on Mediterranean Identity
The first edition of maltabiennale.art 2024, curated by Sofia Baldi Pighi, aims to examine the Mediterranean from an insular perspective, emphasizing hybridity and the island as a site of encounter. The biennale will unfold across Malta's historic sites, including Valletta, Birgu, Ħaġar Qim, and Gozo, in partnership with Heritage Malta and UNESCO. It seeks to defuse postcard-like imagery of the Mediterranean and stand against extractive tourism, instead fostering a vision of harmonious coexistence through contemporary art. The curatorial statement draws on Jean-Luc Nancy's concept of exhibition as the truth of the island, and positions Malta as an observatory for Mediterranean culture, acknowledging centuries of colonization and trauma while promoting multicultural, multiracial, and multilingual identity.
