institutional · 2026-04-22

Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) launched on 25 October with a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Robert Abela and Minister Owen Bonnici. The museum's inaugural exhibition features four monumental installations by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, chosen for their accessibility and vibrant engagement. Located in Floriana's historic Ospizio complex, MICAS offers 1,400 square meters of gallery space plus outdoor gardens, a shop, and a café. Artistic director Edith Devaney emphasized the goal of attracting diverse audiences through the exhibition's color and interactivity. Early weeks saw hundreds of visitors, including many from the general public, during events like an open weekend in early December. Vasconcelos described the opening as a privilege, highlighting the space's purity and beauty. The project involved an investment exceeding €30 million, overseen by executive chairperson Phyllis Muscat and the MICAS board. The museum overlooks Valletta and restored 17th-century fortifications, marking Malta's first dedicated contemporary art institution.
