Malta Biennale 2026 Launches with 130+ Artists Across 40 Countries
The Malta Biennale 2026, themed “Clean / Clear / Cut,” commenced on March 11 and will continue until May 29, turning historical locations across Malta and Gozo into platforms for modern art. Curated by Rosa Martínez, this event features over 130 artists from more than 40 nations, showcasing exhibitions, national and thematic pavilions, performances, and public programs. The curatorial theme explores concepts of purification, division, visibility, and rupture, tackling various political, environmental, and social challenges. Venues include museums, archaeological sites, fortifications, and public areas, where heritage architecture interacts with contemporary art and the complex histories of migration, colonialism, trade, conflict, and cultural exchange. Organized by Heritage Malta with partners like Arts Council Malta and UNESCO, the biennale receives support from multiple government ministries.
