Malo Chapuy: Neo-Medieval Painter Confronts Climate and Tech Feudalism

Malo Chapuy, a French artist born in 1995 in northeastern France, spearheads a neo-gothic resurgence in modern art. He studied philosophy and art history at the Sorbonne and honed his skills at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, concentrating on techniques from the late 13th and early 14th centuries. His artwork merges medieval motifs with contemporary themes, such as wind turbines and astronauts. In 2022, his thesis exhibition showcased an illuminated manuscript alongside a tapestry crafted from Covid-19 face shields. Chapuy's creations were featured in the 2024 Lyon Biennale and the Louvre-Lens exhibition 'Gothiques.' His paintings, like 2024's Saint George, reflect ecological concerns while critiquing industrialization by juxtaposing tactile materials with digital culture.
