Maliheh Afnan's First European Solo Show at MAN Nuoro

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The MAN museum in Nuoro, Sardinia, is showcasing 'Personnages', marking the first solo exhibition in Italy and Europe for Palestinian artist Maliheh Afnan (1935–2016), curated by Luigi Fassi. This exhibition includes a variety of artistic forms such as paintings, plaster reliefs, drawings, miniatures, and combustions, all organized thematically. Afnan's 'Personnages' feature faceless figures, referred to as 'cartographic masks', symbolizing journeys and migrations. After fleeing Palestine for Beirut in 1949, Afnan pursued her studies at the American University of Beirut and later resided in Washington, Kuwait, Paris, and London. Notable pieces include 'Wartorn', 'Silent Witness', and 'What Remains', with her works housed in prominent institutions. The exhibition seeks to highlight an alternative narrative of Mediterranean visual culture.
