Malick Sidibé's Mali Twist at Fondation Cartier in Paris
The Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris presents 'Mali Twist', a major exhibition dedicated to Malian photographer Malick Sidibé (1936-2016), running until February 25, 2018. Curated by André Magnin and Brigitte Ollier, the show features over 250 photographs, including around thirty vintage prints and portraits from 1960 to 1980 shown for the first time. Sidibé, known as 'the eye of Bamako', documented the vibrant youth culture of post-independence Mali after September 22, 1960. His spontaneous studio and nightlife shots capture the energy of a generation embracing rock music, fashion, and dance, epitomized by the 'Mali Twist'. The exhibition includes a swing soundtrack and Cosima Spender's 2008 film 'Dolce vita africana'. Sidibé's work, awarded the Prix Hasselblad and a Golden Lion at the 52nd Venice Biennale, is celebrated for its human warmth and testament to freedom.
