Malevich's Black Square Inspires Yugoslav and Post-Yugoslav Artists in Ljubljana Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-19

The exhibition "Black Square Continued," curated by Mateja Podlesnik, took place at Mestna Galerija Ljubljana from July 2 to September 6, 2015. This event celebrated the 100th anniversary of Kazimir Malevich's iconic 1915 artwork and highlighted the impact of Suprematism in late-socialist Yugoslavia. Notable pieces included Vlado Martek's 'Artists, Read Malevich' and 'Yugoslavia – Malevich,' along with Goran Djordjević's 'K.M. Copies,' 'Electronic Gallery,' and 'Moscow Portraits' from 1991. In 1985, Malevich recreated his original exhibition. Additionally, IRWIN's 'The Corpse of Art' (2003) revisited Malevich's 1935 funeral. Other featured artists were Dragoljub Raša Todosijević, Mladen Stilinović, and Radenko Milak, with contemporary contributions from Ištvan Išt Huzjan, Tanja Ostojić, Igor Grubić, and Vladimir Nikolić, all reflecting Malevich's challenge to state ideologies.
