Málaga Celebrates Picasso with Sculpture Exhibition and New Dialogues
As part of the global Celebration Picasso 1973–2023 initiative marking 50 years since the artist's death, Málaga—Picasso's birthplace—has mounted multiple exhibitions. The Museo Picasso Málaga presents 'Picasso Sculptor. Matter and Body' (until 10 September 2023), the first major Spanish exhibition focusing on his sculpture, featuring works like 'Women with Vase' (1933), a monumental bronze figure on loan from the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. The La Malagueta Cultural Centre hosted 'Edward Quinn: Picasso and the golden years of the Côte d’Azur' (ended 30 June), showcasing intimate photographs by the late Irish photographer taken between 1951 and Picasso's death. From 10 October 2023 to 31 March 2024, 'Echoes of Picasso' will open at the Museo Picasso Málaga, creating dialogues with over 30 international artists including Louise Bourgeois, Richard Prince, and Jameson Green. Picasso's childhood home, Casa Natal Picasso (a heritage monument since 1983), remains a museum with works by Picasso and his father José Ruiz y Blasco. The Museo Picasso Málaga's visitor figures have nearly doubled from 324,861 in 2009 to over 641,000 last year, surpassing other local museums combined.
