Major Tintoretto Exhibition Returns to Venice After 80 Years

exhibition · 2026-05-04

A landmark exhibition on Jacopo Tintoretto (1519–1594) will open in Venice in September 2018, marking the first major retrospective in the city since 1937 and launching a year of celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the artist's birth. The project is conceived and coordinated by Gabriella Belli, director of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, and promoted with the National Gallery of Art in Washington, in collaboration with the Gallerie dell'Accademia di Venezia. The exhibition, titled 'Tintoretto 1519–1594' and curated by Robert Echols and Frederick Ilchman, will be split across two venues: the Gallerie dell'Accademia will focus on Tintoretto's early career (1538–1548), while Palazzo Ducale will cover his mature period (1548–1594) with 45 paintings and 20 drawings. Additional displays will be hosted at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Scuola Grande di San Marco, and Palazzo Mocenigo, effectively turning Venice into a city-wide exhibition. The National Gallery of Art in Washington will host the show's final iteration. The exhibition includes loans from major museums, such as the Prado's 'Portrait of a Man with a Gold Chain' and the National Gallery London's 'The Origin of the Milky Way', as well as lesser-known works never exhibited before. A significant restoration campaign funded by Save Venice has restored 19 paintings, nine of which will be in the show. The exhibition runs from September 7, 2018, to January 6, 2019.
