Major Gianni Versace Retrospective Opens in Paris This Summer

A comprehensive retrospective dedicated to fashion designer Gianni Versace will be presented at the Musée Maillol in Paris from June 5 through the summer. This exhibition, titled 'Gianni Versace Retrospective,' marks the most extensive French museum project focused on his work and represents his return to a Parisian museum setting since 1986. Curated by Saskia Lubnow and Karl von der Ahé, with exhibition design by Nathalie Crinière, the show features approximately 450 items, including original garments, accessories, sketches, decorative objects, photographs, videos, and rare interviews. It explores Versace's distinctive visual system, characterized by sensuality and baroque opulence, and traces the layered references in his creations, from his Calabrian roots and family atelier to influences from Catholic iconography, Greek sculpture, Italian opera, and Baroque art. The exhibition highlights his dialogue with art history, citing inspirations from figures like Botticelli, Canova, Picasso, and Andy Warhol, and emphasizes the role of fashion photography by artists such as Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Patrick Demarchelier, and Mario Testino in disseminating his aesthetic globally. It also acknowledges the impact of pop culture icons like Madonna, Elton John, and George Michael, as well as top models including Carla Bruni, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Karen Mulder, and Linda Evangelista. The scenography is designed around the concept of the runway, referencing Versace's legendary shows at the Hotel Ritz in Place Vendôme, where he made his last public appearance before his death in 1997. The retrospective is timed symbolically ahead of the 30th anniversary of his passing and what would have been his 80th birthday, positioning Versace not merely as a designer but as an author of a visual language that renewed the conversation between fashion, art, and contemporary culture.
