Major Database Project Launches to Document Russian Art in Western Collections
A new bilingual database showcasing Russian art from 1860 to 1940 in Western museums has been introduced at art-russia.org. Named "Russian Art 1860-1940 in Western Museums: Information Database on the Internet," this initiative is part of the Cultural Heritage Database Project, which receives backing from the Russian Ministry of Culture and funding from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, Judith Rothschild Foundation, Galerie Gmurzynska, among others. The project is spearheaded by Nicolas V. Iljine, with significant contributions from Zelfira Tregulova and Irina F. Uritzkaya. The database aims to include between 5,000 and 7,000 artworks by 150 artists, addressing the lack of representation in Western collections. Launched in summer 2003, it features detailed entries and high-quality digital images from 69 institutions.
