Major Antonio Canova Exhibition Coming to Lucca in December 2023
The city of Lucca will host a major retrospective on Antonio Canova and Neoclassicism from December 8, 2023 to September 29, 2024 at the Cavallerizza. The exhibition is organized by the municipality led by Mayor Pardini in partnership with the private company Contemplazioni, and curated by Vittorio Sgarbi, president of the Fondazione Canova di Possagno. Alongside works by Canova (1757-1822), the show will feature pieces by contemporaries Francisco Goya (1746-1828) and Francesco Hayez (1791-1882), as well as local Tuscan artists such as Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787), Bernardino Nocchi (1741-1812), Stefano Tofanelli (1752-1810), and Lorenzo Bartolini (1777-1850). The exhibition aims to promote Tuscan artistic and cultural heritage and attract international tourism. This initiative is part of Lucca's broader cultural strategy, which also includes the upcoming 'Labirinto' festival this summer with exhibitions, performances, and installations in historic churches and palaces.
