Mail Art Exchange Between Paulo Bruscky and Robert Rehfeldt Featured in Berlin Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-19

Between January 10 and March 28, 2015, the Chert gallery in Berlin presented 'Cold War Domestics—Home Archives,' which highlighted correspondence art exchanged between Brazilian artist Paulo Bruscky and East German artist Robert Rehfeldt from 1976 to 1991. Curated by Zanna Gilbert and David Horvitz, the exhibition organized documents across tables, walls, and vitrines. Bruscky’s pieces included Ferrogravura and 'My Brain Draws Like That,' while Rehfeldt’s contributions, rich in text, were projected using a slide projector. The artists employed rubber stamps and typewriters to communicate symbolically, circumventing state monitoring. Although Bruscky visited East Berlin in 1982, their primary connection was through mail. Additionally, a related exhibition showcased typewriter poem postcards by Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt, highlighting the personal nature of Cold War art.
