Mai Trung Thu's 1941 Silk Painting 'Sur le seuil de la maison' to be Auctioned at Bonhams Paris
From December 9 to 16, 2025, Bonhams Cornette de Saint Cyr will host an online auction featuring a silk painting from 1941 by the Vietnamese-French artist Mai Trung Thứ, entitled 'Sur le seuil de la maison.' Created during his Mâcon period, this artwork is estimated to fetch between €180,000 and €280,000. Joan Yip, the Senior Specialist for Indian, Himalayan, and Southeast Asian Art at Bonhams, praised the piece as a remarkable blend of Western composition and traditional Asian artistry. Born in Hai Phong in 1906, Mai Trung Thứ, also known as Mai Thu, is celebrated as a key figure in modern Vietnamese art. His works are part of numerous collections worldwide. In May 2025, the Musée Cernuschi in Paris showcased the first significant French retrospective of modern Vietnamese art, featuring Mai Thu alongside Lê Phô and Vu Cao Dam. The auction will also present a carefully selected array of Vietnamese artworks.
