Mai 30 social housing project in Bergamo combines inclusion and sustainability

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The Mai 30 social housing project in Bergamo, initiated by the Fondazione Morzenti, addresses housing needs for vulnerable groups, including people with mental health issues, young couples, students, and the elderly. The building comprises 23 apartments ranging from 30 to 68 square meters, with seven reserved for individuals with psychological difficulties. Designed by architects Sergio Camerlenghi and Gabriele Pimpini, the structure fills an urban void along via Angelo Maj, featuring two volumes that step down in height to integrate with the surroundings. The building uses dry-assembled wooden load-bearing elements from the first floor to the roof, ensuring high energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Underground spaces house parking, cellars, and technical rooms, while ground-floor commercial areas provide services and job opportunities for disadvantaged people. The project, promoted in 2016 by sisters Clelia and Monica Morzenti, involved collaboration with Kcity and cooperatives La Bonne Semence, Contatto, and Casa Amica. The Morzenti sisters stated they wanted to create something that addressed diverse needs, was beautiful and original, with an alternative and welcoming structure.
