Maguy Marin Retrospective and New Work at Reggio Parma Festival 2023
The Reggio Parma Festival, founded in 2001 by the municipalities of Parma and Reggio Emilia along with local foundations I Teatri, Teatro Due, and Teatro Regio, presents a 2023 program centered on French choreographer Maguy Marin. Born in Toulouse in 1951 to anti-Franco exiles, Marin received the Golden Lion at the 2016 Biennale Danza and has led her eponymous company since 1984. The festival opens on May 30 with a screening of David Mambouch's documentary "Maguy Marin – L'urgence d'agir," focusing on her seminal 1981 piece "May B," inspired by Samuel Beckett's tragicomic universe. Performances of "May B" (May 31), "Singspiele" (2014), "Nocturnes" (2012), and "Umwelt" (2004) will be staged in Reggio Emilia and Parma by Compagnie Maguy Marin, while MM Contemporary Dance Company, directed by Michele Merola, presents "Duo d'Eden" and "Grosse Fugue." The highlight is a new, untitled work premiering November 18 at Cavallerizza di Reggio Emilia, co-produced by the festival. It draws from writings by Annie Lebrun, Juri Armanda, and Roland Gori, documentaries by Adam Curtis, and Jimmy Leipold's "La fabrique du consentement" on Edward Bernays, exploring public opinion formation and manipulation through Marin's distinctive blend of anguish and comedy, physicality and abstraction, theater and pure dance.
