Magnum Photos' 70-Year Survey of Italian History in Portogruaro

Over one hundred photographs from Magnum Photos' archive trace seven decades of Italian history in the exhibition 'L'Italia di Magnum. Da Robert Capa a Paolo Pellegrin' at Palazzo Vescovile in Portogruaro, Veneto. Curated by Walter Guadagnini with Arianna Visani, the show is divided into sections by decade, opening with Robert Capa's post-WWII shots and David Seymour's 1947 image of tourists at the Sistine Chapel. Elliott Erwitt captures Rome, René Burri documents Picasso's 1953 Milan exhibition, and Thomas Hoepker shows Cassius Clay's 1960 Olympic triumph. Bruno Barbey photographs Togliatti's funeral; Ferdinando Scianna depicts 1970s-80s Sicily and Silvio Berlusconi's rise; Leonard Freed records the 1974 divorce referendum; Martin Parr critiques tourism. Later sections feature Alex Majoli's Romagna nightclubs, Thomas Dworzak's G8 Genoa, Peter Marlow's ex-Yugoslavia war, and Paolo Pellegrin's images of St. Peter's Square vigil for Pope John Paul II and migrants on a boat.
