Magic Lantern Film Festival Returns to Rome with Sci-Fi Focus

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

The Magic Lantern Film Festival, founded in 2016 by Adrienne Drake, Ilaria Gianni, and Maria Alicata, will be making its comeback in Rome on June 26–27 at Cinema dei Piccoli, which holds the title of Europe’s smallest cinema in Villa Borghese. This fifth installment, named "The Novum," will explore science fiction through the works of various artists and filmmakers, including John Akomfrah, Yuri Ancarani, and Rosa Barba, among others. The first festival was held in three different academies in Rome: the American Academy, Real Academia de España, and the German Academy Villa Massimo. Past themes have included noir, biopics, childhood, and music videos, with upcoming editions set to feature road movies and comedy.
