Magic Carpets International Residency Network Completes First Year

institutional · 2026-05-04

In July 2018, Magic Carpets, a global network of artist residencies supported by the European Commission’s Creative Europe Programme, wraps up its inaugural year. Founded by Benedetta Carpi De Resmini, the initiative includes 13 partners from Europe, with Kaunas Biennial as the leading partner, alongside Latitudo (Italy), ZKU/KUNSTrePUBLIC (Germany), and others. The project centers on the theme 'The Other, the Stranger,' addressing migration issues. Featured resident artists are Hrvoslava Brkušić (Croatia, 1982) and Melanie Garland (Chile, 1988). Italian artists Grossi Maglioni and Gian Maria Tosatti were also commissioned for location-specific pieces. An exhibition showcasing the year’s works will be held at AlbumArte in Rome in September 2018, curated by Giulia Pardini, who employed the flying carpet metaphor to foster intercultural dialogue.
