Maggie Gyllenhaal has been appointed president of the international jury for the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, running September 2–12, 2026. The decision was made by the Biennale board on the recommendation of artistic director Alberto Barbera. Gyllenhaal, an Oscar-nominated actress, writer, producer, and director, will lead a jury of up to seven film and culture professionals from various countries. The jury will award the Golden Lion for best film, Silver Lions for grand jury prize and best director, Volpi Cups for best actress and actor, special jury prize, best screenplay, and the Marcello Mastroianni Award for emerging young actor. Gyllenhaal's directorial debut, "The Lost Daughter" (2021), won best screenplay at Venice. Her latest film, "The Bride!" (2026), a reimagining of the Frankenstein story starring Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, and Penélope Cruz, was released March 6, 2026, by Warner Bros. Barbera praised Gyllenhaal's "rare consistency" and "intellectual and visceral" cinematic vision.
