Magazzino Opens Research Center and Fellowship Program in New York

Magazzino, the exhibition space founded by Giorgio Spanu and Nancy Olnick along the Hudson River in Cold Spring, New York, has inaugurated a research center dedicated to postwar and contemporary Italian art. The center, adjacent to the galleries, houses a library with over four thousand publications, more than three hundred rare books, and archives of Italian art and design from the 1950s to the present. It also launches an annual Fellowship Program to fund emerging scholars. The first fellow is Francesco Guzzetti, a scholar of Arte Povera who completed a postdoc at Harvard and a PhD at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. His research focuses on the treatment of surface as a transformative site in Arte Povera from 1969 to the late 1970s, exploring how artists used various media to challenge boundaries and comment on Italy's social and cultural reality. Guzzetti will conduct tours of the ongoing exhibition "Arte Povera: From the Olnick Spanu Collection," organize public programs, and contribute to new research on the collection. The center aims to strengthen Magazzino's educational mission and address the scarcity of English-language academic publications on Arte Povera in the United States, as stated by director Vittorio Calabrese. The 2,000-square-meter space was designed by architect Miguel Quasimodo.
