Magazzino: New Private Museum for Arte Povera to Open in Cold Spring in 2017
Collectors Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu will open Magazzino, a private exhibition space of nearly 2,000 square meters in Cold Spring, New York, in 2017. The museum will house their collection of 400 post-war Italian artworks, specializing in Arte Povera, and will be directed by Vittorio Calabrese. Designed by Spanish architect Miguel Garcia Quismondo, it will feature a permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, and a library on Italian art. Admission will be free by appointment. The collection includes works by Alighiero Boetti, Jannis Kounellis, and Giuseppe Penone, many acquired from collector Margherita Stein. Germano Celant, a key figure in Arte Povera, declined to comment on the new space. The Olnick Spanu collection was built over years and includes many site-specific works. The couple, who are active in real estate, decided to create the space because many works are too large for a home.
