Magazzino Italian Art to Show Bochner, Boetti, and Fontana in New York
Magazzino Italian Art in Cold Spring, New York, will host the exhibition "Bochner Boetti Fontana" from October 2, 2020, to January 11, 2021. Curated by American conceptual artist Mel Bochner, the show examines the artistic dialogues between Bochner, Alighiero Boetti, and Lucio Fontana, focusing on the 1960s and 1970s. It juxtaposes Spatialism and Arte Povera from Italy with Conceptual Art and Process Art from the United States. This marks the first time an American artist is exhibited at Magazzino, which was founded in 2017 by Giorgio Spanu and Nancy Olnick and houses over 500 works of postwar Italian art, primarily Arte Povera. The exhibition features paintings, sculptures, and installations, including Bochner's "Meditation on the Theorem of Pythagoras" (1977/1993), "Language Is Not Transparent (Italian/English)" (1970/2019), and "Yizkor (For the Jews of Rome)" (1993); Boetti's "Ghise" (1968), "Alternandosi e dividendosi" (1989) from the Arazzi series, and "Dama" (1967-68); and Fontana's "Concetto Spaziale, I Quanta" (1960), "Concetto Spaziale" (1956), and "Io sono un santo" (1958). The exhibition is supported by the Archivio Alighiero Boetti and the Fondazione Lucio Fontana. A talk between Bochner and Tenley Bick, part of the museum's digital platform Magazzino da casa, will explore Bochner's career and his engagement with Italian postwar art.
