Magazzino Italian Art expands with new wing by Campo Baeza and Quismondo

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Construction of a new wing at Magazzino Italian Art in Cold Spring, New York, will begin in spring 2021. The 1,200-square-meter pavilion, designed by architects Alberto Campo Baeza and Miguel Quismondo, will be adjacent but independent from the main building, maintaining a linear architectural style with windows and skylights to connect interior and exterior. Of the total area, 350 square meters will be exhibition space across three galleries, including one for small sculptures, Murano glass, and ceramics. The lower floor will house a 140-square-meter multifunctional room for film screenings, conferences, and events, while the upper floor will feature a relaxation area with a café and reading room. Director Vittorio Calabrese stated the expansion allows the institution to better serve visitors and expand programming. Quismondo, who also designed the original museum, noted the project reflects the institution's growth and the commitment of founders Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu to the Cold Spring community. The museum currently hosts the exhibition "Bochner Boetti Fontana," exploring connections between Conceptual Art, Spatialism, and Arte Povera.
