Mafia Suspected in Theft of Antonello da Messina Paintings from Sicilian Museum

The theft of four paintings by Renaissance master Antonello da Messina from the Accascina Regional Museum in Messina, Sicily, on Saturday has raised fears of Mafia involvement and exposed security weaknesses. Enzo Caruso, Messina's councillor for culture, expressed astonishment at the ease with which the thieves removed the works, suggesting they had detailed knowledge of the museum's layout. The stolen paintings are so famous that selling them on the black market would be nearly impossible, leading Caruso to speculate they might be used as bargaining chips or collateral in criminal dealings, possibly to blackmail the state for their return. The incident has revived memories of the 1969 disappearance of a Caravaggio masterpiece from a Palermo church, a case long associated with Cosa Nostra and never solved. Caruso noted that the Mafia might attempt to use the paintings as leverage, and they could also serve as guarantees or currency within the criminal underworld. The theft has shocked Italy and raised troubling questions about museum security.
