Maestro di Viboldone: A Mysterious Medieval Sculptor of Lombardy

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Elisa Eccher, an art historian at the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, has focused her research on the unidentified sculptor known as Maestro di Viboldone, who was active in Lombardy during the mid-14th century. In her doctoral dissertation from 2018 at the University of Trento, she catalogs his works and connects him to artists Giovanni di Balduccio and Bonino da Campione. Eccher critiques attributions made by Costantino Baroni, specifically regarding the lunette at Viboldone Abbey and a statue from Morimondo Abbey, which she suspects might be the work of Bonino. In spring 2023, the 'Madonna di Castelletto' was displayed at Palazzo Stampa, previously credited to the Maestro, but she now believes it may originate from his close circle, potentially a student. She envisions it being displayed at the ex-convent of the Annunciata in Abbiategrasso.
