Madrid's Reina Sofía Explores 1961 and the Birth of Fluxus
From June 19 to October 28, 2013, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid showcases "±1961, L'expansion des arts," curated by Julia Robinson and Christian Xatrec. The exhibition emphasizes the contributions of John Cage, La Monte Young, and Anna Halprin. Featured are Cage’s notable pieces, including "First Construction in Metal" (1939) and "4'33''" (1952), alongside his influential classes from 1956 to 1960 that shaped Fluxus. Young's "Trio for Strings" (1958) and performances at Yoko Ono's loft are highlighted, as well as Halprin's "Dancers' Workshop Company" (1955) and "Task" (1957). The program also includes daily presentations of Forti's "5 Dance Constructions" (1961) and Morris's "Passageway" (1961), along with various documents from that era.
