Madrid’s Palacio de Liria Opens to Public for First Time

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

The Palacio de Liria, the Madrid residence of the Dukes of Alba, opened to the public for the first time in September 2019. The neoclassical palace, rebuilt after a 1936 fire, houses one of Spain's most important private art collections, with works by Titian, Goya, El Greco, Velázquez, Rubens, and others spanning 500 years. The initiative by the Casa de Alba Foundation allows visitors to tour the main salons and library, where treasures include Columbus's logbook and the Alba Bible. The palace, still inhabited by the current duke Carlos Fitz-James Stuart, expects around 80,000 visitors annually.
