MADEYOULOOK to present sound installation at South Africa's Venice Biennale pavilion

exhibition · 2026-04-20

MADEYOULOOK, the collaborative duo of Molemo Moiloa and Nare Mokgotho, will represent South Africa at the 60th Venice Biennale with a new sound installation. Their work draws from seven years of research on land, repair infrastructures, and oral histories, centered on two historical South African sites. The installation will be located in the Sale d’Armi within the Arsenale during the biennale's run from 20 April to 24 November. While acknowledging Venice's potential for broader public engagement, the artists note their practice typically involves relational, time-based work at intimate scales, presenting a contrast to the event's fast-paced, grand dimensions. Their work is deeply informed by South African art histories, politics, and traditional practices, while also engaging with global artists and thinkers, particularly from the majority world. For understanding South Africa, they recommend visiting the Johannesburg Art Gallery, reading Njabulo Ndebele's 'Rediscovery of the Ordinary' (1991), and listening to The Brother Moves On's album 'a new myth' (2013). Influences include Santu Mofokeng and numerous other artists and thinkers listed in their response. The artists participated in ArtReview's questionnaire series featuring pavilion participants ahead of the biennale.
