Made in L.A. 2018 Biennial Showcases 33 Artists with Focus on Identity and Diversity at Hammer Museum
From June 3 to September 2, 2018, the Hammer Museum hosted its fourth Made in L.A. biennial at 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles. Curated by Erin Christovale and Anne Ellegood, the event showcased the work of 33 artists, including 23 who identified as female or non-gender-conforming and 21 as artists of color. Without a central theme, the exhibition encouraged a variety of installations that prompted discussions on identity, community, and the human body. Highlights included Luchita Hurtado's surreal paintings, semi-abstract figures by Christina Quarles, Celeste Dupuy-Spencer's piece 'Durham, August 14, 2017', textile art by Diedrick Brackens, and wall reliefs by Aaron Fowler, promoting both demographic inclusivity and personal perspectives.
