Madamecollecte: Milan’s New Anonymous Collectors Association

In 2024, journalist and contemporary art enthusiast Elena Cassin founded madamecollecte, a cultural association in Milan inspired by writer Colette. The group grew from an Instagram profile and conversations with art historian Valentina Casacchia, who became a co-founder. It brings together anonymous collectors who share a passion for art without exclusivity or elitism, and notably without gender distinction—though Cassin highlights that independent female collectors remain rare in Italy. Members meet monthly at Cassin’s private apartment for #collezionistianonimi evenings, featuring an artist (often from her collection) but excluding gallerists, advisors, journalists, and curators to avoid conflicts of interest. A small annual fee ensures continuity and access based on interest, not wealth. The association supports artists through visibility and occasional financial aid, but does not sell or advise. Key discussions include Italian artists’ lack of institutional support, galleries’ hostility toward new collectors, and difficulties in donating works to museums. A future project is a prize for a site-specific work in the association’s condominium. Cassin’s own collection of about 100 works focuses on contemporary art with a personal thread of blue, water, and femininity, including sculptures and wall installations but few photographs or videos.
