MACRO's 'MEDITERRANEANS' Exhibition Explores Mediterranean Identities Through 45 Artists

exhibition · 2026-04-19

Between June 4 and September 19, 2004, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome (MACRO) presented 'MEDITERRANEANS' at its Mattatoio location, under the curation of Zdenka Badivinec along with nine collaborators. This exhibition showcased around forty-five artists from various backgrounds, such as Anri Sala from Albania and Adel Abdessemed from Algeria, along with contributors from Egypt, Israel, and Turkey. Its objective was to reinterpret the Mediterranean as a series of sub-units, reflecting on political, economic, and cultural transformations. Themes of hybrid identities and urban change were prevalent, with significant works like Anri Sala's 'Dammi colori' and Khalil Rabah's 'Museum of Palestine.' This exhibition followed earlier Balkan showcases, signaling new artistic trajectories in response to evolving regional contexts.
