Macro Roma Reopens Past Exhibition in VR for One Day

On January 24, 2017, the Macro museum in Rome will host a one-day virtual reality reprise of the exhibition "Dall'oggi al domani. 24 ore nell'arte contemporanea," which physically closed on October 2, 2016. Using Oculus Rift headsets, visitors can navigate the gallery spaces, examine artworks up close, and understand the spatial relationships between pieces as in a real visit. The event begins at 5:30 PM with a presentation by curators Antonella Sbrilli and Maria Grazia Tolomeo, museum representative Pasquale Enrico Stassi, Marisa Giurdanella from the Autonomous Province of Bolzano – South Tyrol Culture Office (project partner), VR developer Alessandro Rizzi, digital media curator Nicolette Mandarano, documentation professor Paola Castellucci from Sapienza University, and Francesco Palumbo, Director General of Tourism at Mibact. The project highlights how VR can preserve temporary exhibitions for educational purposes, building on artist Mat Collishaw's earlier "Thresholds" project. A limited number of visitors can experience the VR simulation at a station in front of the Macro Cinema Hall.
