MacMasters Beach House by Jorge Hrdina Architects: A Pier-Inspired Home on a Sand Dune

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

In 2023, Jorge Hrdina Architects completed a 600 m² home on a sand dune at MacMasters Beach in Australia. This unique structure, designed to look like a pier, is located just 50 meters from the shore and features underground piers that reach around 15 meters into the sand to combat serious erosion problems. Miwa Negoro led the project, using materials from several suppliers like Australian Architectural Hardwoods and others. Structural engineering was provided by Cantilever Consulting Engineers, while general contracting was managed by The Construction Connection. Anson Smart photographed the residence, which the architects see as a tribute to nature and its wisdom.
