Mack Lecture Series at Walker Art Center Celebrates 30+ Years of Cross-Disciplinary Voices

The Mack Lecture Series at Walker Art Center has provided a platform for influential voices across disciplines for over three decades. Established in 1993 through an endowment by Aaron and Carol Mack, the program was inspired by New York's 92nd Street Y and aims to build community beyond traditional visual and performing arts lectures. Recent presentations included Kulapat Yantrasast discussing "acupuncture architecture" in June and James Thornton addressing global environmental challenges in April, both held at Walker Cinema. The series has featured notable figures including Greil Marcus, Kim Gordon, Brian Eno, and Claudia Rankine exploring contemporary cultural moments. Aaron Mack joined the Walker staff shortly before the couple made their family decision to create the endowed lecture series. Carol Mack notes the Twin Cities arts community "punches above its weight" with the Walker as an integral component, while Aaron emphasizes the importance of individual support as other funding sources diminish. The Macks, former New Yorkers, view diversity of viewpoints as increasingly critical within the arts. Their long-standing support has enabled the Walker to maintain this cross-disciplinary programming that represents different voices in the arts community.
