MacDowell Artist Residency Names Chiwoniso Kaitano as New Executive Director
Chiwoniso Kaitano will become the next executive director of the MacDowell Artist Residency in March, succeeding interim director Philip Himberg. Born in Zimbabwe, Kaitano previously led Girl Be Heard, an NGO using theater and performing arts to drive social change. The appointment followed an extensive search, with board president Andrew M. Senchak noting it comes after a period of inquiry and innovation during the pandemic and recent social justice movements. Board chair Neil Painter praised Kaitano's expertise, collaborative engagement methods, and inspiring leadership qualities. Founded in 1907 by composer Edward MacDowell and musician-philanthropist Marian MacDowell, the residency has supported over 8,000 artists and writers across disciplines. Notable beneficiaries include Audre Lorde's autobiography 'Zami' (1982), James Baldwin's 'Giovanni's Room' (1956), and Faith Ringgold's painting.
