Macchiaioli Masterpieces on View at Palazzo Mazzetti in Asti

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Over 80 works by the Macchiaioli, including pieces from prestigious private European collections, are on display at Palazzo Mazzetti in Asti until May 1, 2022. The exhibition, titled 'I Macchiaioli. L’avventura dell’arte moderna,' is curated by Tiziano Panconi and organized by Arthemisia in collaboration with the Fondazione Asti Musei, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Asti, Regione Piemonte, and Comune di Asti, with support from Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Torino and sponsorship from Gruppo Banca di Asti. The Museoarchives Giovanni Boldini Macchiaioli of Pistoia also contributed. The show traces the Macchiaioli movement from its origins at Florence's Caffè Michelangelo in 1855-56 through its evolution into the 20th century, highlighting the 'macchia' technique of color patches. Featured artists include Telemaco Signorini, Silvestro Lega, Cristiano Banti, Odoardo Borrani, Giovanni Boldini, Giovanni Fattori, and Giuseppe De Nittis. Key works on view are Lega's 'Mamma con bambino' (1866-67), Fattori's 'Tramonto in Maremma' (1900-05), De Nittis's 'Bambino al sole' (1869), Banti's 'Alaide Banti sulla panchina' (1870-75), Borrani's 'Una visita al mio studio' (1872), and Boldini's 'Signore al pianoforte' (1869). Mario Sacco, President of Fondazione Asti Musei, noted that the exhibition brings the most significant exponents of 'macchia' painting to Asti for the first time.
