Macchiaioli Masterpieces from Lombard Collections at GAMManzoni
From October 20, 2017 to February 25, 2018, GAMManzoni in Milan will host 'I Macchiaioli. Capolavori da collezioni lombarde', an exhibition curated by Francesco Luigi Maspes and Enzo Savoia. The show features 35 works from private Lombard collections by key Macchiaioli artists including Giovanni Fattori, Telemaco Signorini, Silvestro Lega, Giuseppe Abbati, Nino Costa, and Odoardo Borrani. The Macchiaioli movement originated in the second half of the 19th century in Tuscany, specifically at the Caffè Michelangelo in Florence. The term 'Macchiaioli' was coined ironically by academic painters in 1861 during the Promotrice fiorentina, referring to the artists' use of color patches (macchie). The group later refined their technique after exposure to Parisian art circles, developing a more deliberate approach to color and volume through contrasts of light and shadow.
