Macchiaioli Exhibition Opens 2024 Calendar at Palazzo Martinengo in Brescia

Palazzo Martinengo in Brescia will host a major exhibition on the Macchiaioli, opening its 2024 exhibition calendar from January 20 to June 9, 2024. Curated by Francesca Dini and Davide Dotti, the show brings together over 100 works, including masterpieces such as Borrani's 'Cucitrici di camicie rosse', Fattori's 'Raccolta del fieno in maremma', Lega's 'I fidanzati', and Signorini's 'Pascoli a Castiglioncello'. The term 'Macchiaioli' was coined in 1862 by a reviewer for the Gazzetta del Popolo di Firenze, initially as a derogatory reference to artists who, around 1855, began renewing Italian painting by rejecting academic rules. The exhibition features loans from private collections, often inaccessible, and museums including the Uffizi Galleries, the Museo della Scienza e Tecnologia 'Leonardo da Vinci' in Milan, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, and the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze. The Macchiaioli, once misunderstood, are now recognized for their significant role in art history and their collaboration with major European artistic communities of the time.
