institutional · 2026-04-19

Elvira Dyangani Ose will step down from her position as director of Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) in early April, departing four months ahead of schedule after her request to oversee the institution while also directing the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial was rejected by the MACBA Consortium. She made history in 2021 as MACBA's first female and first director of color. Her new position will commence in October, concluding her tenure with the exhibition "Projecting a Black Planet." Meanwhile, on February 20, a sculpture by Michael Joo fell during the opening of "Sweat Models 1991–2006," resulting in injuries to four attendees. Additionally, Han Ishu and yang02 received the sixth Tokyo Contemporary Art Award from Tokyo Arts and Space, while the Foundation for Contemporary Arts awarded USD 45,000 to 24 artists, including Shirley Tse.
