MACBA Barcelona Hosts First European Retrospective of Félix González-Torres in a Decade
The Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) presents "Félix González-Torres. The Politics of Relation," the first European retrospective of the Cuban-born artist in ten years. Curated by Tanya Barson, the exhibition features around forty works organized thematically across four large galleries. González-Torres, who died of AIDS in 1996 at age 38, is known for his participatory works like candy spills and stacked paper, which invite audience interaction. The show highlights his engagement with issues such as antimilitarism, post-colonialism, homophobia, and national identity, with a particular focus on connections between Spain and Latin America. Notable pieces include "Untitled (Perfect Lovers)" (1987-90), "Untitled – It's just a matter of time" (1992) translated into Catalan for the first time, and "Portrait of Andrea Rosen" (1992). The exhibition runs until September 12, 2021.
