MACBA Barcelona Examines Pan-Africanism Through Curatorial Shift

Under the direction of Elvira Dyangani Ose, the MACBA – Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona has unveiled 'Projectar un planeta negre: L'art i la cultura de Panàfrica,' which explores pan-Africanism as a contemporary form of knowledge. This exhibition, which will be on display until April 6, 2026, reinterprets pan-Africanism as a 'black planetary epistemology' and showcases pieces such as Ebony G. Patterson's 'Invisible Presence: Bling Memories' (2014) and Kader Attia's 'Asesinos! Asesinos!'. Additionally, it aligns with the Filmoteca de Catalunya's exhibition, 'COL·LISIÓ EXTREMA: Hand-Painted Ghana Posters, 1990s.' The event prompts discussions on the capacity of Western institutions to authentically represent diverse movements without reducing their complexity, broadening the concept of art to encompass political manifestos and archival materials.
