MACAAL Unveils Major Expansion and Permanent Collection in Marrakech

exhibition · 2026-04-27

On February 2, 2025, Marrakech's Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) will launch a permanent exhibition space, made possible by significant funding from its founder, Fondation Alliances. The inaugural show, called Seven Contours, One Collection, features over 150 artworks from the Lazraq family's vast collection, which has been built over 40 years and totals more than 2,000 pieces. It highlights artists like Salah El Mur, Hassan Hajjaj, and many others, with themes of decolonization and globalization explored through curated insights by Morad Montazami and others. The museum will also introduce new features such as specific installations, a New Media Library, a café, and improved green areas, aiming to elevate the global view of African art, as stated by President Othman Lazraq.
