MACA Art Center's 'Gaia Should Be Safe' Examines Terraforming Through 11 Artists' Works

From November 3 to February 23, the MACA Art Center in Beijing showcased 'Gaia Should Be Safe,' marking the conclusion of its trilogy titled 'Who Owns Nature.' This exhibition featured contributions from 11 artists addressing the Earth's transformation for human living. Among the highlights was Femke Herregraven's 'Malleable Regress' (2016), which included rubber slabs sourced from undersea telegraph networks. Sonia Levy's 2024 video 'Creatures of the Lines' illustrated British canals littered with plastic debris. Jonas Staal's 'Empire's Island' (2023) explored the effects of British and U.S. influence on Ascension Island and SpaceX initiatives. Zhuang Hui's work, 'Longitude 109.88 Latitude 31.09' (1995–2008), examined the Three Gorges Dam's repercussions. The exhibition's title in Chinese alludes to a poem by Mao Zedong from 1956, while Julius von Bismarck's 'Talking to Thunder' (2017) featured copper coils launched into tempestuous skies.
